I read in APUG Forum Articles about a developer for 'outdated films' which came from a Photographic Scientist in Czechoslovakia as after WWII only outdated film was available there -- I have been doing some tests - -here it is :
Metol 12grams
Sodium Sulphite anhyd. 48grams
Di-Sodium Phosphate cryst. 12grams
Borax 24grams
Dissolve in WARM water and make to 1 litre
Dilute 1+2 for use

for 1991 dated Kodak TMY 400 rated at 250 ASA I found 26mins at 18oc ( recommended temp. not the usual 20oc)
for old Fuji Neopan 1600 I found I could rate it at 1200 ASA for 26 minutes
for old Ilford FP4+ rated at 80 ASA 22 minutes
for old Kodak t=max 3200 rated at 1000 ASA 30 minutes

always enjoy reading new formulae to play with. have some old neopan 1600 well out of date to try it on.

curious as to how many readers actually prefer to diy with raw ingrediants rather than off the shelf stuff.

I do both whenever possible.

Here the receipt for the Beutler A+B developer. Box speed, high acutance and very suitable for the Efke/Adox 25-50 and 100 single layer films.
It's one of the easiest developers for DIY:

You only need 3 components were the Sodiumcabonate Na2CO3 can be often replaced by household soda.
In Europe it's often decahydrate Soda which means 10. H2O. Na2CO3.

1 mol Na2CO3 = 106g
1 mol 10.H2O.Na2CO3 = 286g

Using decahydrate Soda you need: 286/106 * 5g= 13,49g Soda
Soda is cheap: €0,70 for a kilo (1000g).

Solution A:

1g Metol
5g Sodiumsulfite (sicc)*

Fill up in 100ml demi-water

Solution B:

13,49 g Soda

Fill up in 100ml demi-water

* means water free.

In this way you can make the stock solutions for less then €0,20 which means approx. €0,05 developer costs for each film. Compared to Rodinal 1/3 in price and at least the same acutance.
When adding one drop fixer test (KI, Potassium Iodide) solution you will push the acutance to the highest level.

Best regards,

Robert

Robert:

thanks for the info on Beutler. Have used it fairly regularly for past year or so, with good results. Works well with all film speeds, both new and old types.

Recently mixed my own d-76, and will soon be working up a new batch of parodinal.
