Re: Adox ORT 25 developer

Thanks, Keith, but my experience over many years doesn't quite equate to these times etc. The expectation of results is the thing that varies, of course. Folk like contrast these days - I am still in the multi-grays as possible' camp. I am undergoing a switch from ultra-dilute to ultra-low pH. I am ...

Re: Adox ORT 25 developer

Imageboy you have me totally confused. The formula for POTA that I've seen is

Sodium Sulfite (anhydrous) 30 g
Phenidone 1.5 g
Cold water to make 1L

so what does the 80:80:120 refer to, please?

Re: Hydroquinone with Metol and Phenidone.

Sodium Tripolyphosphate 3.4 gms Sodium Sulphite anhyd 100.0gms Sodium Metabisulphite 0.65 gm Hydroquinone 5.0 gms Phenidone 0.2 gm Boric Acid 2.7 gms Borax 6.8 gms Potassium Bromide 1.0 gm Water to make 1 Litre That's a really curious conglomeration of pH adjusters. The Borax/boric acid pair seem to...

Re: Hydroquinone with Metol and Phenidone.

Ornello, the issue boils down to the statement the M is NOT regenerated by HQ. This flies in the face of statements to the contrary I have run down in the e-net. As a manufacturer Lowell should know and I want to clear the point up. For me, P is expensive and HQ is not. Maybe a POTA with added HQ wo...

Re: Hydroquinone with Metol and Phenidone.

Guys, you are mis-informed about the relationship of the accelerators, Metol & Phenidone, and HQ. In the development process, Metol forms a salt with HQ and becomes ineffective. P acts as a catalyst with the HQ to develop the exposed silver and then " searches for the next free HQ molecule ", to co...

Re: Your first Camera and film.

My first camera was one given to me by my aunt about 1948. It was an English twin lens reflex and it was god awful. No part of the negative was in focus. It's a wonder I ever persisted with photography. Film was Verichrome 'souped' in a soup plate.

Re: Hydroquinone with Metol and Phenidone.

My understanding is (and someone will correct me if I'm wrong!!) :D but at a suitably low pH the hydroquinone doesn't do much except regenerate the metol or phenidone. If the carbonate is dilute enough the pH won't be high enough for the HQ do do any actual developing of itself.

Scanned a couple of IL-HQ last night, and the two developers were quite different in results. The Technidol wasn't as continuous tone as the H&W which surprised me. I had rather imagined the Technidol would've been better. Used an EI of 30 (because the shutter speeds of the Kiev-30M were more conven...

Thanks for your thoughts - I haven't used D-76 or ID-11 since about 1957. It isn't the best choice for those films at all. High dilution with little agitation and long times suit best. I just haven't had much exposure (pun) to pyro of any flavour and v little to glycin. I tried that in FX-2 when it ...

I'm sure you are correct. It just so happens I have, as I said, 2 x 30m rolls of the stuff.
I'm frugal. Why not use film I'm comfortable knowing that it can give results I like?
Seems to me the developers are the biggest change in the environment I have to adapt to. :-)j

Miha is correct insofaras I would be quite happy to get the same results I got all those years ago. My techniques need resharpening and I've lost the 'eye' for a picture. I'm hoping that to eliminate the variables I know and learn how to overcome the ones I don't, I will get back to producing pics I...

I well remember that year. 2nd year uni with a Retina 1A. Still using the Kodak PlusX and ID-11 but was given a scales so set about homebrewing. The chems were quite expensive (there is a bottle PPD marked 1oz 3/- right in front of me) but at the med. school I befriended enough people to get hospita...

How did it turn out? I used that film years ago with Beutler, FX-1 and FX-2 and it really pleased me. Presently have a 100' roll in the refridgerator untouched. I was planning to use HC-110 at 1:100 or Rodinal so I am interested to hear how you found it w the Acutol-S. Continuous contrast is a way b...

I have a couple of rolls of 150' myself and it is proving difficult to get CT. I use it in 16mm. I have tried many developers and there are many to go, it seems. D76 sounds pretty ridiculous to me. My best result so far is to use H&W (homebrew) following the instructions for Bluefire but at an EI of...
