Alternatives for Ilford SFX ?

Post by circleofconfusion »

I'm down to my last 4 rolls of SFX so I'm wondering about possible alternatives. After a quick googling I've come up with a few options:

Rollei R3
Rollei IR
Classic Pan
Maco Cube 400
HIE (I wish it would load in daylight...)

Does anyone have any thoughts on these films or any other suggestions they could make ?

I'm also having trouble finding places (in the UK) to buy small quantites of these films. I want to buy 1 or 2 rolls of each to try them out but I keep finding packs of 5 or 10 !!

Cube 400c is out of production, we're selling out.

Rollei R3 is till 710nm quite on the edge of I.R.
Rollei IR-400 is a good possibility, sensitive till 820nm but on 750nm the sensitivity is going down fast. Can be loaded/unloaded in subdue light.

About Classic pan I can not say anything.

All Rollei films (except the Retro 100/400, which is APX100/400 emulsion) we are selling seperately. Standard they 're sold in the wooden Rollei box 135-36/10pcs. 120 rollfilm/12 pcs.

I've just done some very quick tests on Rollei R3 and IR400.

see here http://www.thecircleofconfusion.com/blo ... 608-063147

R3 didn't give any noticeable IR effect but IR400 looks promising. I'll be doing some more thorough tests this weekend (if it stays sunny!)

With Rollei R3 you can not get any real IR wood effect. The sensitivity is not far enough in the IR area.
Take care with the 35mm film to load and unload in subdue light due to the piping effect with this clear polyester layer.

Because this film has an extended range it's nice to shoot street scenes under tungsten light with this film.

Rollei IR-400 you can use for IR with a 665nm 695 or 715nm filter. Over 715nm you have not enough sensitivity. You can also see it in the graphics:
http://www.fotohuisrovo.nl/documentatie ... IR-400.pdf
Because the (spectral) sensitivity is much less than HIE and the film has an anti-halo layer it's not possible to get IR pictures with a red filter.

Thanks for the info Robert.

The light-pipe problem did get me. The first 10 or so frames had light leaks around the sprocket holes but none made it to the image area. I'm going to be much more careful when I load it next time!

Has anyone had bother getting Rollei films onto their tank spiral ? I've done 2 IR400 and 2 R3 and both have stuck about 2/3s of the way though. My plastic spirals are all clean and I had not bother at the weekend with them when I did PanF and SFX.

It's hard to describe but the Rollei films feel a bit sticky or rough. Could it be the lurid green anti-halation layer?

Post by Jay DeFehr »

Here's a link to some really nice images made with HIE in 510-Pyro, with development details.

A nice comparison of different infrared materials can be seen here:

Thanks for the link

I am interested in trying Pyro at some point. Though for now I'm sticking to 'standard' developers while I get a feel how different films perform.

Well in that case you could try the Moersch Tanol developer if you want to go for a staining type developer without going to mix yourself:
