I hope that Kodak will survive and continue making stills-camera films even though I rarely use their products.

I use lots of their film and chemicals. You can't get anything like Xtol from any other company. I really don't want them to go away.

Hello Foolscape:
As a manufacturer of black and white photo chemistry, please allow me to provide you with the information that others can and do make chemistry as good as or better than, does Kodak.
F.Y.I., Kodak chemistry is made by Champion Chemical.

Clayton Chemical

Actually, I use Clayton chemicals as well. My exclusive paper fixer is AFC Fixer, and I use F76+ on occasion, as well as the CP Powder paper developer. The Kodak chems that I use are HC-110, Photo-Flo, Xtol, Dektol, Selectol Soft, Farmer's Reducer, and (ocasionally, when I'm not using just Acedic Acid & water) the Indicator Stop Bath. Do you have equivilents to these?

yes we do. Not only do we make Stop Bath with ind, we also make ODORLESS FIXER and ODORLESS IND STOP BATH. We make our FILM RINSE ADDITIVE, it dilutes 1+200 for the photo group and 1+1500 & 1+3000 for the Cine customers. We make all the powder products as well.

I acknowledge that there are plenty of very good alternatives to Kodak B&W chemicals, but their films would be sorely missed by those who use them regularly, although I personally use Ilford films and papers.

Ilford Ilfotec-HC can replace HC-110 for those who like that sort of film developer and ID-11 can replace D-76. Kodak Xtol however, is somewhat unique in it's formulation.

According to Kodak, their film division is still profitable.

That's the point. It's everything else that's the problem.

It's film manufacturing that's Kodak's strength. They entered the digital imaging market far too late to establish themselves.
It would indeed be a sad day if classic films like Tri-X (400TX) died out.

It would be great if they go under; then maybe DuPont or some other company with some sanity will buy the remnants of the company up and continue and expand film offerings.

Rochester, NY doesn't agree, and I'm not so sure about DuPont, either. They abandoned their photography business in the 1970s, and the DuPont heirs are anything but sane. No, Kodak just needs to spin off all the digital junk, and return to their core business. If they put some extra effort into it, they could help film regain some of its lost market share.

To me, DuPont has the best structure for such an acquisition. They could put their chemical know-how to work to add to Kodak's.
