Your fixer is probably not bad. If it was the film would be fogged. The purple stain is sensitising dye. It is "bleached out" by sulfite in the fixer. The fixer you used was probably low in sulfite. This can be corrected by adding additional sodium sulfite to the working strength solution.

when that first happned to me i just said, be happy for the accutance :D ,
but seriously you can refix and it will be gone
